More than Just Engineering

Part of our mission is to inspire the next generation of space explorers, be it engineers, advocates, or astronauts. On top of our projects, UML Rocketry has a growing social media presence, Business team , and STEM Outreach programs.

If you are just interested in the final frontier in any way, this is the club for you! All students at UMass Lowell are welcome, and no experience is required.

GROWING THE NEXT GENERATION OF ROCKETEERS

UMass Lowell Rocketry is an undergraduate high-power rocketry competition and research group. We prioritize studying structural components and on-board electronics of our vehicles.  But that's just the surface of what we do. UML Rocketry provides our members with:

  • Industry-like experience (yes, seriously) 
  • Experience working in large teams and leadership experience
  • Experience in Operations, Manufacturing, Design, and other topics
  • Opportunities to work with K-12 Students on STEM topics

UML Rocketry FIRE Program

First-year Introduction to Rocketry Experience 

New to rocketry? That's Fine! On the surface, hobby rocketry can look daunting and expensive. We aim to provide new members with hands-on experience in constructing model rockets and experience working in engineering teams within their first year of being in the club. If you are interested, the club can provide the resources and experience needed to get certifications in High Power Rocketry (through the National Association of Rocketry - NAR), HAM Radio Licenses, FAA Part 107 Drone Licenses, and more. 

The first-year program: 

Fall Semester:
Personal Mid-Power Rockets
Lectures on Structural Design, Recovery Systems, and Simulations

Spring Semester:
Intraclub Competition (Teams of 3-5 members)
L1 Certifications (limited number to be determined)

Compete against the country

NASA University Student Launch Initiative (USLI)

This 9-month competition tasks student teams with designing, building, and launching High Power Rockets (HPR) carrying scientific and engineering payloads. Along the way, we educate K-12 Students on how rockets work and what being in a STEM field is like.

Meetings are typically on Monday and Thursday, 6 - 8 PM

 Subsystems:

  • Structural and Aerodynamic Design 
  • Recovery Electronics and Recovery System Design
  • Safety and Operations
  • Media and Engagement Team (Business, Education, and Graphic Design Majors NEEDED)
  • Payload Design
    • An electro-mechanical system to complete the state mission requirements listed in the competition handbook (releases in August)
    • Mechanical, Computer, Electrical engineers and programmers wanted!
